Wasteland Blog Tour: Meet Caleb + A Giveaway

This week is the second and final week of the promotional blog tour for Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan's YA post-apocalyptic novel Wasteland, and I'm thrilled to share a few tidbits about hero Caleb as well as a short excerpt to tease and entice you. Be sure and check the bottom of the post for the full list of participating blogs as they each feature a fun guest post, interview, or excerpt that you won't want to miss!

MEET CALEB

Caleb is lean with a strong jaw and hazel eyes. When we first meet him, he is an expert at weaponry and obsessed with hunting down and killing variants, an outcast people he calls “mutants” and whom he blames for a tragedy in his past. As the story progresses—and as he gets to know the girl called Esther—he becomes more humanized, tender, and fair.

"[It] was as if he was aflame, burning with a righteous fever that would not be satisfied until each mutant was hunted down, one by one, and made to suffer. A bloodlust was upon him. He took off in pursuit and now felt the gladfire in his legs; the mutant, a fast runner with a good head start, glanced back and the shock on his face was obvious. Caleb was nearly upon him.”

* Caleb sounds rather badass. I'm a fan already! *

WASTELAND

Welcome to the Wasteland. Where all the adults are long gone, and now no one lives past the age of nineteen. Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan’s post-apocalyptic debut is the first of a trilogy in which everyone is forced to live under the looming threat of rampant disease and brutal attacks by the Variants —- hermaphroditic outcasts that live on the outskirts of Prin. Esther thinks there’s more to life than toiling at harvesting, gleaning, and excavating, day after day under the relentless sun, just hoping to make it to the next day. But then Caleb, a mysterious stranger, arrives in town, and Esther begins to question who she can trust. As shady pasts unravel into the present and new romances develop, Caleb and Esther realize that they must team together to fight for their lives and for the freedom of Prin.

  1. I do wonder about this one...all over 19...why 19? And there are so many like this

  2. Oh I've definitely recently gotten a review copy for this book, but I haven't picked it up yet. After reading that description of Caleb and that heart-pounding excerpt, I think I need to pick up my copy soon! Wasteland sounds like an exciting post-apocalyptic/dystopian that I'll fall in love with. Thanks for sharing, Jenny!

  4. Dang! Everyone over 19? That is some serious consequence for reaching the ripe old age of 20 LOL :)

  5. You're right, Caleb does sound rather badass. I love when we get to watch a guy who is pretty hard around the edges soften up as he falls for the girl. There is just something so sweet about it, and everybody wants to be the girl to tame the wild beast right? Great introduction to Caleb, thanks for sharing!

  6. Why does 20 seem so old now? *Scratches head* 19 does seem arbitrary. I guess I'll have to read and find out!

  14. Ahh, I love it when a hero softenes after meating the heroine. I think I'd love to see Caleb's trasformation, mostly because, like Alison said, he does sound very passionate.

Oh, and as for LaFEvers, I'd defintiely start with Grave Mercy. They are very connected. And I know you'll love both. <3

  16. *fans self!* ooo, I'm loving the sound of this Caleb! That description "a strong jaw and hazel eyes" has definitely gotten my attention ;) (I have a thing for hazel eyes!) And I absolutely adore when the badass guy meets a sweet girl and transforms into a gentler person.

I want to read this book very very badly! Especially after reading that heart-pounding excerpt you've shared with us.

Thank you so much for posting this, Jenny! If I was in the US I would definitely enter the giveaway too :D

  19. I've heard a lot about this one lately and even though it sounds really similar to The Girl Who Owned the City, I think I'll give it a shot. Mostly because of Caleb! ;)

  20. Oh, Caleb...you're so determined to kill 'em all! It's hard to think of teens as ruling the world (though they already think they do, without the whole apocalypse thing and all!).

  21. How old is Caleb? Who takes care of the babies if everyone dies at 19? What is with all the fire on the cover or is that the sun? How was it co-writing the novel? Did you each write separate characters or do you meld your scenes together or pick who wrote it better?
(You've probably answered these questions already on the other blogs, I just haven't visited all their posts yet).
